Everyday Keto Food Choices: A Practical Reading Path
A food guide can help you compare portions, labels, and trade-offs; it cannot give one permanent “yes” or “no” verdict for everyone on keto. Whether a food fits depends on the portion, the carbohydrate approach a person and their clinician have chosen, the rest of the meal, preferences, access, and relevant health conditions.
This path follows the first-week planning sequence. If you have not yet checked whether a ketogenic diet is appropriate for you, start with Is Keto Right for You?.
Use food guides as decision aids, not permission lists
Start with the actual package label or a reliable food-composition database, then compare a normal portion with the carbohydrate amount you have decided to use. The United States Department of Agriculture's FoodData Central provides food-composition data, while the U.S. Food and Drug Administration explains the Nutrition Facts label; both are more useful than a generic “keto” badge.12
For a plain ingredient, the Food Database lets you choose the matching USDA record, inspect the listed portion, and see the calculation used. For packaged foods, check the serving size, total carbohydrate, fiber, ingredients, and any sugar alcohols rather than assuming the marketing claim settles the question. A product can be low in carbohydrate and still be expensive, unsuitable for an allergy, poorly tolerated, or a poor fit for someone's overall nutrition plan.
Read in the order you are likely to decide
The guides below are deliberately narrow. They answer a specific shopping, cooking, or social-eating question after the broader food list and safety screen—not before them.

Use focused food guides when you are deciding what to buy, cook, or order—not as a substitute for the safety check.

When a food question is really a safety question
For people using glucose-lowering medication, making a large carbohydrate change may require a monitoring and medication plan before food choices change. Alcohol can also complicate glucose management and judgment. The American Diabetes Association recommends individualizing eating-pattern changes and considering medication safety rather than treating dietary advice as a substitute for clinical care.3
