TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure)

Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) is an estimate of energy used over a day through resting metabolism, digestion and movement. Macro calculators commonly use it as a starting energy estimate before assigning fat, protein and carbohydrate targets.

What are the components of TDEE?

TDEE is commonly described through basal metabolic rate (BMR), non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT), exercise activity thermogenesis (EAT) and the thermic effect of food (TEF). Resting metabolism is usually the largest component, while activity can vary substantially between days and people.

The Mifflin–St Jeor equation estimates resting energy expenditure from weight, height, age and sex.1 A calculator then applies assumptions about activity and digestion to estimate TDEE. Both the equation and activity category introduce uncertainty, so the result is not a direct measurement.

Why does TDEE matter on keto?

TDEE supplies the energy estimate; it does not determine the carbohydrate definition. A macro plan may set carbohydrate and protein first, then allocate the remaining estimated energy to fat. About 20–50 g of nonfiber carbohydrate is a common research description of a very-low-carbohydrate ketogenic pattern, but it is not a personalized or guaranteed ketosis threshold.2 For label arithmetic, including US versus EU/UK fibre treatment, use the separate net-carb guide.

A sustained difference between energy intake and expenditure matters to weight change, but formula-based TDEE is an initial estimate rather than a promise about a particular rate of change.   • TDEE is not BMR. BMR estimates resting expenditure; TDEE adds estimated activity and digestion.

  • TDEE can change. Body mass, body composition, activity, health and other conditions can alter expenditure, so a previous estimate may no longer fit.
