Low-Carb Indian Restaurant Orders: A Menu Checklist
Before you order, pick one dish and ask the kitchen three things: what is in the sauce, what comes on the side, and whether a swap is possible. A checklist cannot guarantee a result, and menus, availability, and recipes vary by location and date.
Check the main preparation first
Start with the protein, then ask how it reaches the plate. What is the marinade? Is the dish grilled, simmered in sauce, or fried? Is anything sweet added?
At Madras Masala's Ann Arbor, Michigan location, checked October 2, 2026, the menu describes Tandoori Chicken and Chicken Tikka with yogurt and spice marinades, and Vindaloo with potatoes 3. For Tandoori Chicken: what else is in the marinade, and does a sauce come with it? For Vindaloo: can the potatoes be left out, and would anything replace them? The menu does not publish full recipes, modified-plate values, substitutions, or cross-contact controls 3. Other locations and dates may differ.
Sauces and table questions
A sauce can change what a dish contains, so ask before ordering. What thickens it: cream, nuts, flour, onions, or something else? Is sugar or another sweet ingredient added? Can it arrive on the side? Is a lighter-sauce version possible?
Then ask about the table. Are rice, bread, or sides included automatically, and can they be skipped? Say what you want to avoid before the order is entered, not after the plate arrives. If a staff member is unsure, treat the question as unresolved and ask someone who can check with the kitchen. If the order is complicated, write the answers down so you can compare restaurants later.
Bread, rice, and legumes
Bread and rice often arrive with a plate, and legumes can sit inside a dish under another name. Ask what is included, what is optional, and what the kitchen can leave off. Menus, availability, and recipes vary by location and date, so a dish listed at one restaurant may not be offered at another.
The Curry Up Now general menu, checked October 2, 2026, lists a Tikka Masala Burrito including tortilla, turmeric rice, and chana masala, and a Tikka Masala Bowl including dal makhni or chana masala, turmeric rice, and sabudana papad 1. For the Burrito: can it be made without the tortilla, and what would replace it? For the Bowl: which legume dish comes with it, and can the rice or papad be left out? The menu confirms no portions, macros, or substitutions 1.
If you are cooking at home, the low-carb rice substitute guide covers alternatives; a restaurant may not offer any of them.
Condiments and drinks
Small extras are easy to overlook. Ask what is in each chutney, pickle, raita, or dressing, and whether it can come on the side. Ask whether any of them are sweetened or contain dairy or nuts, and treat an uncertain answer as unresolved.
For drinks, ask whether a drink is sweetened, and whether water or another unsweetened option is available. If you want to compare sauce and dressing ingredients at home, the fats and condiments database is a place to start.
Two hypothetical orders
These are planning exercises, not recommendations, and neither has been confirmed with a kitchen. Each leaves the full recipe, any substitution, and the portion size unknown.
Hypothetical order one (Madras Masala menu): Tandoori Chicken with a vegetable side. Unresolved: full recipe, vegetable-side availability, portion size.
Hypothetical order two (Curry Up Now menu): the Bowl without rice and papad. Unresolved: recipe, swap, portion.
The net carb calculator only subtracts documented nutrients for a known, stated serving. Ingredient details alone cannot give you nutrition values. If a restaurant provides complete carbohydrate and fiber values along with a stated portion, you can enter them there. Otherwise, the values for a modified plate stay unknown.
The keto restaurants guide covers general ordering habits that apply at any restaurant.
Confirm allergens before you order
A menu description is not an allergen statement. The Curry Up Now allergen page, checked October 2, 2026, declares dairy for its chicken kebab listing 2. That is one listing; it does not extend to every kebab, recipe, or restaurant. Ingredient lists are also not guarantees about carbohydrates or cross-contact 2.
Tell staff about any allergy before you order, ask for the restaurant's allergen information, ask how shared equipment is handled, and choose another place if the answers are unclear.
